discriminate means to distinguish, distinguish, separate one from another. Discrimination is a situation in which a person or group is treated unfavorably because of prejudice , usually belonging to a distinct social category, should be distinguished from affirmative action (which involves differentiation and recognition). These categories include race, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, age and disability. There is a broad anti-discrimination legislation on equal employment opportunities, housing and goods and services.
International efforts to combat discrimination have been almost nonexistent until the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations (UN) in 1945. One aim of this paper was to promote "respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms of all individuals regardless of race, sex, language or religion."
